What Bratislava is not

Bratislava is a small city within a broader European context. It is not even among the top 50 most populous cities in Europe. It will never be among the biggest cities as the entire national population of Slovakia is just over 5 million people. It never had the historic importance of close by cities like Vienna or Budapest. It does not offer an extensive cultural program comparable to those cities. Its old town is rather small. It experienced delayed growth after the second world war. Locals would often emigrate to Vienna, Prague or further to the West.

What Bratislava is

Bratislava is a very young, developing city. Its skyline was built over the last 10 years, drastically changing the layout of the city. Its lack of development after world war two led to an explosion of new projects after Slovakia became an EU member in 2004. It became a common place of operations for Viennese / Austrian companies that valued cheaper labour costs and a more business friendly regulatory framework. In the first decade thereafter, Bratislava was able to attract global companies to establish a branch in the city which eventually led to the explosion of building developments in the second decade from mid 2010s onward. At first it was mainly office buildings but now more and more residential projects are getting in the focus. The skyline is impressive for a city of its size and is ever changing. Bratislava's skyline today is unrecognizable from only 5 years ago.
